Chips, deep stains, old fillings and other imperfections on one or more of the teeth in your smile can leave you feeling self-conscious. In a situation like this, many people will reach out to our skilled dentist, Dr. Maureen Toal, to explore their restoration options.

To restore the cosmetic appearance of a single tooth, Dr. Toal will often recommend having the entire enamel layer of the tooth restored with a porcelain, or porcelain fused to metal crown. A dental crown is essentially a perfect replica of the enamel layer of the tooth. The crown itself is hollow to allow it to be anchored on a post-like abutment formed from the core structures of the tooth.

Dr. Toal will start by removing the entire tooth enamel layer. She will then make an impression of the abutment and any corresponding teeth. The impression will be sent to a dental lab where the porcelain crown is custom made. A hard plastic temporary crown is cemented over the abutment to protect it.

Our team will call you back in for a follow-up appointment when your porcelain crown is ready. The temporary crown will be removed and the new crown will be cemented directly onto the abutment.
